Jay Rex Smith

On Saturday June 17, 2023, Jay Rex Smith passed away at the age of 73 with his loving wife, brother and sister-and-law by his side. Jay was born July 24, 1949, in Centerville, Iowa to Merle and Mildred Smith. 

Back in the day, Jay’s nickname was “Sport”. He graduated from Moravia High School in Moravia, Iowa. He never met a stranger and never had a lack for words.  Jay was known for his quick wit and infectious smile, or some might say his ornery grin.  Jay motto in life was based off Frank Sinatra’s song, My Way.  His wife expressed that Jay would always say “I DID IT MY WAY”.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Mildred. He is survived by his wife Greta, his daughter Amanda Jaye Smith and stepdaughters Tammy (Brad) Cassady and Janet (Darin) Westhoff.  Grandchildren Taylor Thompson and Davis Westhoff.  A sister Judith (Russel) Littke, brother Jim (Lana) Smith as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023, from 1-4 in the Fellowship Hall at the Moravia Grace United Methodist Church in Moravia, Iowa.
